How to start learning the guitar the easiest way
Article by Stephen Clarke
Don’t pay for expensive on-going guitar lessons until you have read through this article, this will save you time, effort & money.
My job is to teach guitar to beginners & the intermediates, my other job is to play guitar in a successful UK based covers band that in turn earns me a lot of money from doing what i love.
I play large venue gigs all around the UK on a very regular basis and the thing that happens to me almost after every gig is this….
People always approach me and ask the same question…”What is the best, fastest and easiest way to learn guitar?”
It still surprises me that so many people want to learn or wish they could play the guitar.
So what is the best way to start??
Ok, before you take the plunge ask yourself a few questions on why you want to learn.
The obvious question is why do you want to learn? Is it because you want to join a band? Is it because you just want to play for fun? or is it you can sing and want to be able to write a few songs?
When you make your mind up on why you want to start you can then set yourself a standard of playing you wish to acheive.

For example, if you just want to be able to write a few songs then just learning most of the chords will be enough.
If you want to join a band then you may have to go a little bit more in depth and put in more effort. There are many things to learn but thats the best thing about learning the guitar, its fun, and gives you a real sense of acheivement…..you will be proud of yourself and in turn you will impress all those around you.
So what are the first steps in learning and what do you need to start?
1. You need a Guitar (obviously)Decide what style of music you want to play, if you want to play rock then buy an electric, if you wish to play for fun or start writing songs then i suggest learning on an acoustic. But this is down to you. Whether you play an electric or acoustic the learning process is the same.
2. A tuner – You may see some guitarist tuning up by ear but for the beginner buy yourself a tuner. I say this because if you start to learn on a guitar that is out of tune then it will sound wrong and more than likely make you give up because you will not see any results. Go to any music store and purchase an electric tuner, they are really easy to use and are very cheap.
3. A way of learning. Now this is the thing you must get right from the start. There are many ways to learn guitar..
a) Go to the local music shop and get one2one lessons from a tutor (however this can be very expensive and you will be stuck to a rigid timetable of lessons)
b)Search the net on sites like youtube and find out how to play the chords and get your strumming patterns.
c) Learn from a professional online course (there are many available)Learning from a professional online tutorial course is a very good option because these take you step by step in the right order. They will teach you how to walk before you run and the best bit is you can do it from the comfort of your own home, in your own time and it is very cheap.
I was speaking to a friend of mine recently who is going to singing lessons, he is paying his tutor a week for an hours lesson. That’s a lot of money over a month.
Now like i said before i teach guitar myself and i make a great living with it, i charge about the same as the singing tutor and i can do upto 6 lessons a day.
The reason i’m telling you this is to give you a picture on what people pay for lessons……BUT consider this, those who learn from an online course learn exactly the same as what i teach, but they do it for the fraction of the cost. These online lessons are really something and to be honest i have seen a drop in students over the last year because of this.
In short, if you are serious about learning the guitar and want to do it the easiest, fastest and cheapest way then learn online, but do it with a professional course, this will give you structure and you will have a lot of fun doing it.
I have created a website that reviews the some of the best Guitar Tutorials that are out there. Together with my own free starter guide, videos and tips.
